The nation's unemployment rate zoomed to a five-year high of 6.1 percent in August as employers slashed 84,000 jobs, the government said Friday.
Where we these jobs, which industry? How many new jobs were created in other areas? Don't just give us %, tells us where and why it is happening.
summergal46845...6.1% That is a scary percentage. What exactly do you not understand?
LAST NIGHT WE HEARD 9/11 9/11 9/11 WITH A SICKO VIDEO OF IT ALL AGAIN.... THEN POW POW POW POW POW
What we really needed to hear was how to save the American people from the last eight years of Bush-it - McCain didnt discuss the economy at all....
Where we these jobs, which industry?
yes, and in all sectors.
How many new jobs were created in other areas?
lots...the only problem is the other areas would be other countries.
Don't just give us %, tells us where and why it is happening.
Why ? Sound RePigLician leadership
For a good hearty laugh, here are a couple of quotes from repubs on this site from one week ago ...
Carson-345063
... you hate George Bush and will swallow any cockeyed conspiracy that undermines the facts that the economy isn't as bad as the democrat lies portray them. I understand your predicament Jim, you want to believe what's worst for America, because when America wins, socialist Democrats lose...Paul Kahn
All you doom-and-gloom Liberals just CANNOT admit you are wrong about the economy. Where's that recession every Liberal talked about incessantly...the recession that just never happened. It never happened, despite the hundreds of billions of dollars that were involved in the bad mortgage scandal, the almost trillion $ loss in the banking industry. …. You were wrong on the US losing the war against terrorists in Iraq, you were wrong about the troop surge, and you are wrong about the economy! You Liberals sicken me with your hypocrisy and denial of the facts!
They love to see our jobs go over sea like India. I am a republic but not voting for the this time around. Now that he selected the women. What was he thinking?
lol chuck ,
and apparently these jobless figures were release from the biased left media...
Ratatosk, you cannot be that naive.
Ok, if you do not believe that the unemployment is as stated, visit Ohio. I live here and our unemployment rate is 7.2. You see homes in foreclosure, in every neighborhood. The middle class and working middle class are hurting. I believe that the rate is understated due to those employees which are in the cash industry. Thus, day labors, construction workers, lawn care services, day housekeepers.
I am not asking you to vote for Obama. I am asking you to open your eyes. It was not the biased left media, America needs a change. We can not continue down this path of destruction. How is it that we can spend Billions on a senseless war(which I have family members fighting in) however, the economy is weak at best. I live in a middle class neighborhood and there are 5 homes in foreclosure. Not because these individuals where fiscally irresponsible, yet because 4 months without a job.
Chuck1968,
Great job! They Republicans keep shoveling bull$hit and hoping we eat it.
McCAIN REVEALED: TRADE
GET THE FACTS.
John McCain is one of the strongest advocates in Congress for unfair trade agreements. He has made expanding free trade agreements a central part of his 2008 campaign and has demonstrated through his long record in Congress that he is not going to fi ght to keep good jobs here at home.
Jeez this is easy
The unemployment rate rose from 5.7 to 6.1 percent in August, and non-
farm payroll employment continued to trend down (-84,000), the Bureau of
Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. In August,
employment fell in manufacturing and employment services, while mining and
health care continued to add jobs. Average hourly earnings rose by 7 cents,
or 0.4 percent, over the month.
Unemployment (Household Survey Data)
The number of unemployed persons rose by 592,000 to 9.4 million in August, and the unemployment rate increased by 0.4 percentage point to 6.1 percent. Over the past 12 months, the number of unemployed persons has increased by 2.2 million and the unemployment rate has risen by 1.4 percentage points, with most of the increase occurring over the past 4 months. (See table A-1.)
In August, the unemployment rates for adult men (5.6 percent), adult women (5.3 percent), whites (5.4 percent), blacks (10.6 percent), and Hispanics (8.0 percent) rose, while the jobless rate for teenagers was little changed at 18.9 percent. The unemployment rate for Asians was 4.4 percent in August, not seasonally adjusted. (See tables A-1, A-2, and A-3.)
Among the unemployed, the number of persons who lost their last job rose by
417,000 to 4.8 million in August, with increases occurring among those on tem-
porary layoff and those who do not expect to be recalled to work. Over the last
4 months, the number of unemployed job losers has increased by 810,000. (See
table A-8.)
In August, the number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or
more) rose by 163,000 to 1.8 million, an increase of 589,000 over the past 12
months. The newly unemployed--those who were jobless fewer than 5 weeks--
increased by 400,000 over the month. (See table A-9.)
Total Employment and the Labor Force (Household Survey Data)
The civilian labor force, at 154.9 million, was about unchanged in August,
and the labor force participation rate remained at 66.1 percent. Total employ-
ment, at 145.5 million, was little changed from July. The employment-population
ratio fell over the month to 62.1 percent in August, down 1.3 percentage points
from its most recent high of 63.4 percent in December 2006. (See table A-1.)
In August, the number of persons who worked part time for economic reasons was essentially unchanged at 5.7 million. This category includes persons who indicated that they would like to work full time but were working part time because their hours had been cut back or they were unable to find full-time jobs. (See table A-5.)
The number of multiple jobholders increased by 298,000 in August to 8.1 million, accounting for 5.5 percent of total employed. (See table A-6.)

The only number we need to know at this point is how many days left before the total disaster of GW leaves office.
The Shrub is the best at destroying anything the common working man has. Thanks King Shrub for all you've done.
The Shrub is the best at destroying anything the common working man has. Thanks King Shrub for all you've done.
I fear that is only going to get worse before he leaves and at this point I don't think Bush cares about what happens to American people in these next coming months he has left. I wish John McCain was much clearer last night on his policies but as an idependent who has voted republican most of the time Obama is looking real good to me. I'm tired of the same BS McCain says he is a maverick and then went and picked Palin as a running mate all I can see is John McCain is still conforming to the republican party as usual. Personally, I'm afraid to take a chance on the 5 or 10% of McCain that is not like Bush.
McCain said his tax cuts will "create jobs" ... you mean the same way that Bush's did?
It is a tried and true way to bring back the good old days...........of the depression!
No one should be shocked by these numbers I believe the number of unemployed are much worst because they don't tell us the number of people working v/s the number of people who are not working.
When was the last time the republican party was good for the economy or for the working class?
Once your unemployment runs out you are taken off the list of needing a job even though you still don't have a job. They should have a percentage for this group also. Just think about it and try to imagine what the number would be like. I am sure it would blow your mind.
Tax cuts don't bring back jobs if they are the wrong tax cuts like McBush's tax cut plan.
Tax cuts need to be targeted to growing new jobs, such as, tax credits for consumers to purchase solar hot water heaters, or farmers to install wind generators, or utilities to build new nuclear power plants, and so on.
Handing money to the rich creates McMansions consuming lots of energy, and luxury foreign cars, etc.
You get the picture.
He meant overseas
There needs to be a long term element to drive the economy today. We had agriculture, then industry then service now what? Maybe the government can rebuilt the infrastructure in this country and push alternative means of energy as a stimulus. Create jobs, create wealth and reduce the tax burden and debt.
Repubs laughed at Obama for suggesting these very ideas. Called it something like the new 'new deal'
I agree though this would help boost the economy while at the same time fixes the infrastructure.
Exactly, Geno, the economy needs a basic drive, and that drive is green jobs.
We have lost mfg jobs now are losing service jobs. Energy has to be next and the next administration needs to step up and get active in this - I dont see McCain leading this charge, we will remain a military threat to the world and they will continue to hate us (thanks GW).
People..the unemployment rate is 15% EASY. You are forgetting about the folks "off the board".
) adults that still live at home w/ parents aged 18-60. Because of this neo con economy people by the millions have been forced to move in with relatives. MANY of these do not work. Do not get unemployment etc.
)People like me, 47 and a retired teamster. I will not work w/o a contract or low pay. I saved every dime and don't have to work. Since the neo cons got in office I buy little, hide my money (like the millionaires!) and will not support these anti American, anti middle class, anti worker NEO CONS.
And will not give a DIME to their phony war..
PEOPLE GET THE GOVERNMENT THEY DESERVE
ONLY ONE PARTY WORSE THAN THE DEMS....
Here in Atlanta, Georgia there are approximately 50,000 illegal Latinos employed in various industries. I happen to work in Landscaping business and finding it very difficult every day to keep my head above water because of the competition coming from those that hire illegals. This is just one city of the thousands that are employing these people. I wonder what the numbers would be if those jobs were filled by Americans. I cannot drive by a government work site such as; highway construction, new school construction etc. without seeing more than one half the work force Latino. We need to secure those borders and get our people back to work.
I was on unemployment a few years back - my 26 weeks came and went - I was unemployed for 11 months (2003-04) Once my benefits stopped I was no longer a part of the percentage. There are millions like that.
Also many that don't even file for unemployment to begin with.
Stop whining, its all in your head!
Scott- 377513, It is all in our heads that the good jobs were as Sen. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota book titled "Take this Job and Ship It" Duyba and his Republicans fiends certainly did. 1929 style. Then with our FRIENDLY PHIL GRAM Deregulated the Banking industry and for the first time in 77 years allowed the investment industry to raid the Federal Reserve and your hard earned money are set to disappear under that oh sooo safe FDIC.
We as a people need to start a new car company that only make hybrid cars that can get 100 miles to the gallon, low cost and bad credit no problem, just turn your old car in and destroy the gas guzzlers. It may not solve all the problems but it sure would help, all these cars made in America.
if you think this is bad, wait and see what happen if McCain wins. he is for everything bush has ask for. they are selling America. wake up people. what part of george and john do you not understand ???
I did see Sarah carrying her little baby that needs special care around to make us feel she is a good mother. a good mother would be at home taking care of that Child.
She also paraded that kid around that knocked up Bristol like he was some kind of hero. Hell, give me a few willing 17 year old girls. I'll get a freaking medal!!!!
Don't worry be happy people. Sarah Palin said that she and Senator McCain will cut taxes and stimulate the economy, it will all be better in January! Trust them.
Palin is OK. She is being groomed for 2012. Maybe run for the Senate in 2010. She would make a better candidate than John. The GOP needs a new look other than old white guys.
Here is an except from the bureau of labor. Even though unemplyment went up, so did business productivity; but not in durable goods manufacturing. This outta tell you something.
Productivity and Costs, Second Quarter 2008 Revised
Internet address: USDL 08-1251
Historical, technical TRANSMISSION OF THIS
information: (202) 691-5606 MATERIAL IS EMBARGOED
Current data: (202) 691-5200 UNTIL 8:30 A.M. EDT,
Media contact: (202) 691-5902 THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2008.
PRODUCTIVITY AND COSTS Second Quarter 2008, Revised
The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor today reported revised productivity data--as measured by output per hour of all persons--for the second quarter of 2008. The seasonally adjusted annual rates of productivity change in the second quarter were:
4.3 percent in the business sector and 4.3 percent in the nonfarm business sector.
In both sectors, the second-quarter productivity gains were larger than the preliminary estimates reported on August 8.
In manufacturing, the revised productivity changes in the second quarter were:
-2.2 percent in manufacturing, -4.5 percent in durable goods manufacturing, and 0.2 percent in nondurable goods manufacturing.
These are U. S. Department of Labor Statistics. They don't deal in specifics, only percentages...they look at the overall "big picture" of the economy. What they are saying is that the economy is ailing. The economy is getting worse. More jobs are being lost/eliminated than are being created. The overall situation looks even worse than they had projected.
Where is it happening? It is happening everywhere...in every major employment sector in the United States. Even if summergal isn't (yet) feeling the pinch, the majority of Americans are.
As for why it is happening, the first and most logical place to look would be the policies of the Republican administration that seems hell-bent on bankrupting this economy in order to keep their corporate government fat and happy (and let's not overlook their determination to keep the war machine well-oiled).
What summergal doesn't seem concerned or curious about is what can be done to fix it. Waiting for more excuses and rationalizations (when they even bother to offer them) from a failed administration is one approach...we could keep listening to the plentiful speeches about why we need to continue to watch our standard of living bottom out while big energy companies rake in record profits.
Or we could vote this administration out in November. We could refuse to accept another four years of watching our nations prosperity - along with our rights - being sucked up by the Republicans and sent to Iraq. Rather than voting for more of the same failed policies that the Republicans are clinging to, we could vote for a different approach from a different administration. This is the option I choose. What about you?
US companies who have overseas operations can use those figures in there productivity reports. Lower wages, more output, higher productivity ratios.
They is nothing the Rep. can do that the Dem. are not a part of. They control Washington at the present time, and if Obama gets into office, he says he will reduce taxes. What a joke!!
Our taxes are what fund all these programs like unemployment insurance. If he reduces taxes, whose is he talking about. Sure as hell is not going to be the man on the street!!
He is as rich as any Rep. and so are all his friends!! His "friends" will get the tax breaks, we will not get a tax break, we will have to pay more, because in order to keep all our government programs working we need more taxes not less!!
Any "man on the street" knows that. Obama is not working for the ordinary man like the liberal press would have us believe, he is working for himself and his rich friends.
"Our taxes are what fund all these programs like unemployment insurance" WRONG Most of your taxes go for the rich and military industrial complex You have to PAY in to get unemployment insurance. You have to WORK to get it. You pay for it when you work.
Liberal press? How can that be if their all owned by neo cons??????
Actually your employer pays for unemployment insurance and in some cases they can contest whether you receive any or not.
Steven100, actually Obama only said he'd reduce taxes for the middle class and increase taxes on big business. Quit spreading lies. Remember it was daddy Bush that said "no new taxes", he did actually lie.
The fact is that the present McCain economic proposals will reduce taxes for working class (70,000 a year) families by about 3%.
Obama's proposals reduce taces 5%.
Do you need to borrow a calculator?
>
It' a good thing both Bush and McCain are saying the US economy is in great shape (sarcasm).
Source it.
In addition to GDP growing at a 1.9 percent rate - more than doubling the 0.9 percent growth rate in the first quarter and especially impressive considering the "blue chip" consensus forecast at the beginning of the second quarter called for only 0.1 percent growth - exports grew 9.2 percent. While we expect to see the full benefit of the growth package reflected in economic data as the year continues, second-quarter growth is evidence that the President's call for the bipartisan stimulus package was well-timed and properly sized.
whitehouse_dot_gov / economy
Source it? The president himself went on national tv a few weeks ago and said the economy is in pretty shape.
Heck, Phil Gramm, the presidents economic adviser said the economy is in great shape and that Americas are a bunch of whiners."
Source it? The president himself went on national tv a few weeks ago and said the economy is in pretty shape.
OK, well I didn't see it. I'm sure there must have been response from several media outlets over such an outrageous comment. I would like to see one.
It's not just about job losses, look at the stock market. My wife and I have lost money in investments.
The two generally go hand in hand. A McCaine presidency will make these numbers worse, you can't embrace Bush's policy and think it's going to work at some point. Bush's policies are proved to be disastrous. McCaine has no clue how the economy works and when he had Phil Graham to help him with it, he only called Americans, Whiners.
I have lost about six thousand dollars in my 401K since January 1 of this year.
Since the New Deal, Republicans have been on the wrong side of every issue of concern to ordinary Americans; Social Security, the war in Vietnam, Iraq, equal rights, civil liberties, church- state separation, consumer issues, public education, reproductive freedom, national health care, labor issues, gun policy, campaign-finance reform, the environment
and tax fairness. No political party could remain so consistently wrong by accident.
The only rational conclusion is that, despite their cynical "family values" propaganda, the Republican Party is a criminal conspiracy to betray the interests of the American people
in favor of plutocratic and corporate interests, and absolutist religious groups.
urlemmings..... Excellent comments! The only people that can't comprehend this are those with I.Q.'s <45. One way or the other, taxes will have to be increased by whoever is in control, whether it be new taxes or just more of the same taxes. The Repub habit of borrowing and/or using the government unlimited credit card, is going to come to an end one way or the other, period!
Obama is not raising taxes he is giving us the bill for the money that the republicans have spent.
We need to bring down the deficit.
We need to bring back good paying jobs to the working class.
Whomever, our president becomes we all will be taxed to death because we are 9 trillion dollars in debt. Under Bill Clinton my husband and I were taxed to the max but we were yet still prosperous.
Bill Clinton had a Republican Congress. How do expalin that??
They will point out the Lewinsky scandal. It is irrevelant, but they do it anyway because that's all they got.
Unemployment 75,000 a month, Housing Market $0, National Debt 1Trillion and growing, John McCain for President, Priceless...because we can't afford another Republican President!
He could just do like Bill Clinton and declare the debt absolved and we are just going to start over. AND we will claim that we balanced the budget and created a surplus!!!!!!!!
What is your point? At least we had full employment and my house was worth more than I owed on it. The most important fact about the last Democratic President, his misconduct only involved sex and tobacco. Bush-it misconduct has caused thousands of American soldiers and civilian lives and John McCain wants to continue a war that was never intended to be won, but simple control the flow of oil in the Gulf! It is..What it is!
That is what you don't understand. We don't control the flow of oil anywhere, but here in the USA and the tree huggers are making that more and more costly. ExxonMobil is only the 14th largest oil company in the world, 14th!!! Your house was worth more than you paid for it and it had nothing to do with WILD BILL. HE had a Republican controlled Congress. He reaped the benefits of what George Sr. started and just didn't do anything to screw it up!! W is an idiot!! I do not deny that!!! By the way more soldiers died under Bill Clinton that have during the tenure of Bush. Look it up!! Final point. Stop talking about trillon dollar debts AND saying that if was Better with Bill. Thats all.........
Why does everyone say the last 8 years was Bad. The first 4 years of Bush was very productive (He even got re-elected). Every since the Iraq war I'v seen Democrats take controll of the Congress and than stall the American Goverment for the last 2 years to make the Country very unstable. For the last 2 years we have been controlled by Congress and it's failures. The "DO NOTHING CONGRESS" is democrate controlled and now we want to Hand the Predidentcy to the Democrats also. This doesn't sound Good.
When majority rules it only takes 1 Vote. Pelosi won't even let them vote. That sounds like control.
Why does everyone say the last 8 years was Bad ?
warcrimes, warcrimes, warcrimes
Don't confuse people with the facts, it makes them cranky, when they can't blame someone or something instead of looking for solution to the problems that are facing our great country.
[Why does everyone say the last 8 years was Bad.]
I guess it is because here in America, it has been bad. Where have you been?
This is a republican recession aggravated by a republican war brought on by a belligerent republican foreign policy. The democrats do not have a veto proof majority contrary to the republican lie machine. Face it, republicans, you blew it. If you really had the good of the country at heart you would just step aside.
Thank you. It is nice to know that some citizens understand how it works. The Pubs have been dragging their feet since January 2007 so they could point at the Democratic leadership and say, 'See? I told you so!!!'
This RNC ticket is so bad even the uninformed will see it, and it will soon be over, my friends.
We will at last have a President that can think, and the pubs should lose a few more seats in Congress. The challenge will be undoing all the damage done since 2000.
